The UBC Board of Governors has approved the reappointment of Prof. Roger Sugden as Dean of the Faculty of Management at UBC’s Okanagan campus for a five-year term effective July 1, 2017.
Sugden earned PhD and master’s degrees in economics from Warwick University as well as a law degree from Sheffield University, UK. He was founding Head of the Management School and Head of Internationalisation at Stirling University, Scotland, before joining UBC in 2012.
Prior to this, Sugden served twice as Head of the Department of Commerce at the University of Birmingham, part of the oldest business school in England. During this time, Sugden was also director of various research centres, and led the school’s Industrial and Labour Economics Group.
A scholar with extensive international experience in management and economics education, Sugden’s research has focused on economic organization, the interests of publics and regional socio-economic development. He is currently leading projects on the recent history of occupational structure and economic strategy in the Okanagan, and on organizing knowledge to support BC’s wine industry. He has been closely involved in bringing over $4 million in federal government funding to the Okanagan campus.
The Faculty of Management has more than 850 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. During Sugden’s tenure as Dean, the Bachelor of Management has been transformed from a 2+2 into a four-year delivery model, to provide students with greater inclusion in the Faculty. The Master of Management has become more accessible to working professionals with its new, part-time, blended delivery that explores innovative and nimble ways of leading and managing in a rapidly changing, globalized world.
By partnering with other faculties, Co-op Education was successfully expanded last fall to students across the Okanagan campus, resulting in nearly double the number of students engaged in meaningful work experiences and enriched learning opportunities. Having embraced experiential learning, the Faculty of Management works systematically in collaboration with communities throughout the Okanagan. It has also developed several new international partnerships that provide value to the region, such as leadership development opportunities for the BC wine industry.
