Continuing and Professional Education

At UBC, we recognize that the way people learn and pursue their education and career goals is changing. We want to ensure that learners from all backgrounds have the opportunity for flexible learning options that fit their needs. This is why transformative learning is an important part of our ‘Shaping UBC’s Next Century‘ strategic plan and UBC Okanagan’s Outlook 2040. The non-degree framework addresses this need by creating opportunities for learning that extend past traditional degrees, such as non-credit programs.

Micro-credentials

In January 2021, UBC Okanagan launched two new non-credit programs, funded by the Province of British Columbia, to offer more flexible learning options. These are the first of many programs to be launched as part of UBC Okanagan’s continuing and professional education portfolio.

What is a Micro-credential?

Micro-credentials refer to programs offered in short, flexible time frames that focus on specific skills and competencies. These programs provide learners with the ability to quickly gain and demonstrate proficiency in new skills to current and prospective employers. Micro-credential programs can be taken individually or may be part of a degree program. Upon program completion, learners receive a non-credit credential and a digital badge to share their mastery of skills.

Learner Benefits

  • Gain proficiency in new industry skills and best practices.
  • Choose programs that focus on specific skills and competencies.
  • Network with current and future industry leaders.
  • Share accomplishments with digital badges.
