Dr. Ying Zhu appointed Academic Advisor on Artificial Intelligence

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Ying Zhu has been appointed as the Academic Advisor on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a one-year term, effective September 1, 2025.

In this role, Dr. Zhu will support the development of an AI roadmap for the Okanagan campus, providing leadership and guidance on exploring AI and emerging technologies, as well as serving as a key point of connection between the campus and local communities. In this role, she will:

  • Advise campus leadership on the benefits, risks and issues related to AI in developing a roadmap aligned with the university’s vision, values and goals.
  • Serve as a connection and communication point for on-campus AI activities and initiatives.
  • Support major campus initiatives related to AI and emerging technologies, including for teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes.
  • Foster community and local industry connections related to AI and its applications to support UBCO students, faculty and staff.

Dr. Zhu joined UBC Okanagan in 2011 and is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Management. She holds a PhD in Marketing from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, an MSc in General Management from the University of Lethbridge and an MA in Computer Science from Minzu University.

Drawing on her extensive interdisciplinary experience, research and industry knowledge, Dr. Zhu has supported several major initiatives related to AI integration in teaching and learning alongside campus and community partners, including developing an AI for Business micro-credential, offering the AI workshop to the local community and teaching one of the first AI for Business courses at the Faculty of Management.

She is a strong advocate for enhancing AI literacy and promoting the safe, ethical use of AI both within the university and throughout the broader community, with a goal of fostering informed engagement with AI technologies to ensure students, faculty, staff and community members understand AI’s potential, ethical considerations and responsible practices.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Zhu. I look forward to working with her as we further explore the impacts and opportunities of AI and emerging technologies on our campus.

Sincerely,

Jackie Denison
