Step 1: Become Familiar with Blended Learning

Blended learning emerges from an understanding of the relative strengths of face-to-face and online learning. This opens a wide range of possibilities for redesign that goes beyond enhancing the traditional classroom lecture. Attaining the threshold of blended learning means replacing aspects of face-to-face learning with appropriate online learning experiences, such as labs, simulations, tutorials, and assessment. Blended learning represents a new approach and mix of classroom and online activities consistent with the goals of specific courses or programs. (Garrison & Vaughan, 2008)

For Fall 2020, UBC is recommending that faculties “[e]xplore ways to adapt both your course design and delivery to take advantage of the flexibility made possible by online learning while cultivating a strong, inclusive, online learning community.” (Guiding Principles, 2020).

This approach is consistent with the existing research and practice in blended learning and the 3 Steps suggested on this site.
